January 23, 2016 Episode #22: Ciao, Jules

Episode #22: Ciao, Jules

I think you can guess why we named this episode how we did. We kept the Bianchi talk brief, and the reason why, is because I hate being sad. Me and Ryan are passionate fans and aspiring journalists sure, but we also enjoy what we do, and we love having a laugh while talking some Motorsport, and that’s what we’ve done for 22 episodes now. I hope you all can understand that when listening. Cheers!

In the meantime, we probably treated this episode like Justin Gatlin does when he sees a drug testing van. We sped through a heap of topics, so lemme give you a rundown:

NEWS:

– Obviously, the passing of Jules Bianchi
– Haas revealing their interest of Esteban Gutierrez, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nico Hulkenberg and just about anyone who’s currently in F1, while we debate who should get that Ferrari seat between Bottas and Hulkenberg.
– Jenson Button rumoured to be a new BBC Top Gear host, and the original trio heading to Amazon Prime
– Carmen Jorda and Michèle Mouton going to war, and why we actually are taking Carmen Jorda’s side on this. Seriously.

– The Hungarian Grand Prix, Vettel reaching 41 Career Wins first, over Hamilton, Mercedes terrible day at the office, both controversial Daniel Ricciardo incidents, and why we condemned Autosport and Sky Sports’ ratings in protection of Lewis Hamilton. Again.

INDYCAR:

– Derrick Walker resigning as President of Operations
– A review of Milwaukee as Sebastian Bourdais pulled off a stunner, and Paul Tracy complimented his improved oval skills. Am I high?
– A review of Iowa, as Ryan Hunter-Reay remembered he was Ryan Hunter-Reay, as American take their first clean sweep of the podium since the 2006 Indy 500. And we nearly had Ed Carpenter fight Sage Karam. That was fun.
– Article 9.2.8, meaning IndyCar drivers can’t badmouth the series anymore without getting fined. Because that’ll change everything!

Enjoy the show folks!

January 23, 2016 Episode #21: King On Kling

Episode #21: King On Kling

Hey folks, welcome back to Motorsport 101, and in this episode, we talk about Women’s Soccer! Yay for the England and USA teams on 3rd and 1st respectively. They’re all awesome. Fun fact: Me and King have enormous crushes on Alex Morgan and Meghan Klingenberg, so if you ever end up seeing a random black guy in your girls’ judo class, you know why!

But seriously, in this stacked episode:

– We talk about how terrible the GPDA Survey ended up being, and why the voice of reason against it was… Max Verstappen?!
– The British GP, how Williams lost the race, how Hamilton pretty much fluked the win, and all the other action in what was a crazy and awesome race, that F1 kinda needed.
– The Formula E Season Finale, and how Nelson Piquet nearly lost a Championship that was his for the taking as Sebastian Buemi narrowly lost out, and while Battersea didn’t really work as a venue, it was only a minor blemish on an otherwise FANTASTIC first season
– And a look at IndyCar in Fontana, in one of the craziest races of the year, Graham Rahal picked up just his second series victory in one as Takuma Sato and Ryan Hunter-Reay make a case for Pack Racing to be banned. But is it really as bad as many think?

All that and more in Episode 21 of the Motorsport 101 Podcast! Enjoy!

January 23, 2016 Episode #20: The Sound of Masochism

Episode #20: The Sound of Masochism

Good news! Due to upgrading the website, the quality of the show should be much better now I effectively have no file size limit! Hooray for breaking my wallet out!

In this episode of Motorsport 101, me and Ryan King look back over the Austrian Grand Prix, a race where all of a sudden, Nico Rosberg took probably the best win of his career to date as Lewis Hamilton had no answer, Felipe Massa held off Sebastian Vettel for third, and we’re still trying to remove parts of Fernando Alonso from a buried Ferrari, as the midfield stole the show…

…or did they? After the serious amounts of complaints over said GP, we break down why it’s unfair to criticize the race itself, and why we as masochistic F1 fans are over-critical of the era we’re in, and why we make the past look so good.

It’s a seriously philosophical edition of the show, and I hope you enjoy the new and improved, Motorsport 101!

January 23, 2016 Episode #19: “Sage Karam Is My Homeboy”

Episode #19: “Sage Karam Is My Homeboy”

First up, before anything else, a hearty thank you to you, the #DreNation for supporting this show. This was originally a University project, and it scored at 80% yesterday, meaning I got a first! Seriously, I’m over the moon and I couldn’t have done this without my web designer Stephanie Hunter, my co-hosts Sascha Wagenblast, Gino Van Den Broceke, Scott Woodwiss and of course, my partner in crime, Ryan King. You all are amazing.

In this stacked episode, we talk about all the recent F1 news, such as Raikkonen wanting more danger in F1, the fuel-saving and complaining about car difficulty and fuel saving after a mediocre Canadian GP, which we also review.

We also tackle MotoGP in Mugello as Jorge Lorenzo strolled to a 3rd consecutive victory, ahead of a very lucky Andrea Iannone. We also talk about Simone Corsi’s idiocy against Sam Lowes in Moto2 and Miguel Oliviera’s first Moto3 victory, making history for Portugal.

And we talk about IndyCar in Detroit and Texas as Carlos Munoz took his first IndyCar win, alongside Sebastian Bourdais in a thrilling Race 2, and Scott Dixon’s Texas 600 victory, as well as discuss THAT story about what happened when me and Sage Karam butted heads on Twitter… and I won. I should get a night with his girlfriend as a prize…

But enjoy the longest Motorsport 101 show to date with me, Ryan King, and a new co-host in Downforce Radio’s own Louis Suddaby, my radio husband. Enjoy!

January 23, 2016 Episode #18: The Full Monty

Episode #18: The Full Monty

Man, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. A whole month as a matter of fact. I apologize, I’ve been extremely busy with University assignments so this kind of got pushed to one side. I wasn’t going to bother producing more episodes beyond “Newgarden of Eden” to be honest, as this whole Podcast was a University project, BUT, thanks to you the listeners, you convinced me to keep going, so thank you, it means a lot that you care enough that you want to hear more.

In this loaded episode with me and Ryan King, we talk about Jean Todt’s “I give no f***s” regarding Alcohol advertising, talk about Lewis Hamilton’s eye-watering £130m contract extension, then break down the Monaco snoozefest… well apart from the last 15 laps and the pit stop heard around the world, why Hamilton really hasn’t changed, and the big Grosjean/Verstappen crash that started the whole thing off. And I swear at King. A lot.

After that, we talk about the Indy 500, the drama before it, and the action during it, with Juan Pablo Montoya winning his 2nd Indy 500 ahead of Will Power, 15 years after winning his 1st one. We also talk about Simona being lazy as hell, Simon Pagueaud’s rough day at the office, the crashes and the other hilarity that ensued.

And finally, we talk about the FIA press release of a fortnight ago and the proposed changes to improve the show in 2016 and 2017. Is “improving the show” the right way to go for F1?

All that and more on the return of the Motorsport 101 Podcast, enjoy!

UPDATE 1/6: There ARE Skype undertones on this episode. What happened was when I was taping the show, it was going on in the middle of a Pit Bored taping on Downforce Radio, between 7 people, and they were obviously doing their show at the same time, so all the Skype notifications you’d get, got on the recording too, and I couldn’t really remove them without removing part of my audio, so yeah…it definitely hurt the quality a bit. I apologize, that was unprofessional of me and I’ll make sure that doesn’t happen again.

January 23, 2016 Episode #17: Newgarden Of Eden

Episode #17: Newgarden Of Eden

Welcome back to the Motorsport 101 Podcast! We took a week off but we’re back, and we’re sweeping through another round of ridiculous Motorsport action this past week and a half or so.

We go through the recent news, as Force India keep pushing for an open engined formula, as well as bypassing Pirelli when it comes to potential tyre choices, whether Claire Williams as a point when it comes to potentially moving F1 races to 4pm CET, Azerbaijan potentially replacing Monza on the calendar, and Mick Schumacher’s F4 win, and why it’s such easy click-bait to talk about someone most corporations don’t actually give a shit about.

And of course, reviewing all the last 2 weekend’s action, including F1 in Bahrain as Lewis Hamilton continues to dominate, but with added Ferrari in the form of Kimi Raikkonen, as well as Renault and McLaren’s awful day’s in the desert. MotoGP gets a look as we review Argentina, and we take a look at the IndyCar races at Long Beach and Alabama as Scott Dixon and young star Josef Newgarden finally got his first series victory!

Enjoy the show with me, and Ryan King!

January 23, 2016 Episode #16: The Tortoise And The Hamilton

Episode #16: The Tortoise And The Hamilton

It’s been a long week here.

It was a boring Chinese Grand Prix, but like actual China, the political notes rang home, as Nico Rosberg accused Lewis Hamilton of slowing down on purpose. We break down whether Rosberg had a claim, or whether he’s a big crybaby. Spoiler, it’s the latter, and we explain why. We also cover the issues that Renault have going forward, and why Sky’s race coverage was ATROCIOUS.

Also, we go in-depth on the latest story to hit Motorsport, and that’s the use of Grid and Podium girls in the sport, the WEC’s half-hearted gesture to remove them, and is Lewis Hamilton a sexist? (Spoiler, again, he isn’t.)

We also review the Grand Prix of the Americas, Marc Marquez’s phenomenal weekend, as well as Sam Lowes and Danny Kent’s lower class wins, and the first British double win at a weekend since 1977.

IndyCar gets a look with their Grand Prix of Louisiana, and the washout and relative farce that the race became due to the weather and the high number of safety cars as the result of the poor state of the track itself. And yay for the Mayor of Hinchtown and Simona “Motorsport Bae” de Silverstro!

And finally, we review Formula E at Long Beach, where Nelson Piquet Jr. dominated for the win, while Jean-Eric Vergne won the podium, if you get what I mean. ? Enjoy the show with me and @RyanErikKing and thanks for listening!

January 23, 2016 Episode #15: Return Of The Kings

Episode #15: Return Of The Kings

Welcome back to Motorsport 101, dear listeners! In this absolutely stacked episode, me and the returning Ryan King (See what I did there?), we take a look back at the insane Triple Header of Motorsport we had at the weekend.

First up, the Malaysian Grand Prix in Formula 1, Sebastian Vettel’s 40th win and his first for Ferrari, we’ll be looking at how Mercedes got it wrong, Kimi Raikkonen’s comeback, Williams mediocrity, Force India’s scalps, McLaren and Manor at the back, as well as the Toro Rosso’s beating the factory Red Bull team, and Max Verstappen becoming F1’s youngest ever scorer.

Then, MotoGP in Qatar, and Valentino Rossi’s continued GOD-like tendency of winning at the tender age of 36. Also, the resurgence of the Ducati’s as they scored their first double podium in nearly 5 years, Andrea Dovizioso pushing Rossi to the limits, and Iannone’s first podium. Also, Lorenzo’s collapsing helmet, Marquez’s mistake, and why Dani Pedrosa’s career hangs in the balance due to his arm pump problem.

I also lost my IndyCar virginity! We’ll be talking about the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, all the broken endplates and why a fan had to be hospitalized for one, and Penske curb-stomping the opposition as the super-team of four finished 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th, Montoya taking his 17th IndyCar win.

And finally, a look at Bernie’s comments regarding a female F1 series and why it causes more problems than it solves, and why we should really stop looking at Susie Wolff like she’s the gospel leader of women in Motorsport like many see her as, and realize she’s actually being very shrewd.

So, I really hope you enjoy what I think is, is our best and most robust Podcast to date. Enjoy!

January 23, 2016 Episode #14: All Roads Lead To Marquez

Episode #14: All Roads Lead To Marquez

Surprise, motherf***ers!

I got a bonus episode of the Podcast for you! Our usual Bike Live producer was unavailable this past Friday, so me, and Bike Live co-hosts Louis Suddaby and Rebecca James got together for a 2 and a quarter hour marathon episode, where we previewed all the key points going into the MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 seasons, ahead of the 2015 Season opener in Qatar next week!

Can anything stop Marc Marquez? Will Jorge Lorenzo bounce back? Are Ducati actually really good again? And where do Suzuki fit in? And will Becks ever stop going loopy over the Lowes brothers? All important questions that mostly get answered over the course of the 130 minute run time!

Oh, and if you liked this edition of the show, please, listen in LIVE on Downforce Radio every Friday Night live at 8pm! Thanks for listening!

January 23, 2016 Episode #13: Pipebomb

Episode #13: Pipebomb

Me and The Crekkan, are frustrated F1 fans.

It’s not been the best fortnight since we last did a show on here. The Australian Grand Prix came and went, and it was largely uninteresting, Hamilton winning a three-tiered procession around Albert Park. But on top of that was the Giedo Van Der Garde lawsuit, Manor’s simple inability to be able to race, and now, today’s breaking news, the German Grand Prix no longer taking place this season, as neither Hockenheim and The Nurburgring are able to stump up the cash to run.

So yeah, a lot of frustrating elements in the Formula 1 world, so consider this episode of the Podcast, very…rant-heavy. But not at the usual targets and tropes you might expect. You’ll see what I mean when you listen.

So yeah, enjoy the show, consider it, counselling for the F1 fan. Not even Arnie could save this one.
