May 28, 2022 Episode #364: 2022 Formula E Berlin ePrix Report

Episode #364: 2022 Formula E Berlin ePrix Report

Episode #364 takes us to Berlin and one of our favourite rounds at Templehof Airport. And for all the chaos that this series tends to provide, this was… a different affair. A calm, energy saving tactical pair of races. And the story of the weekend… was off the track.

In Formula E’s worst kept secret, McLaren made it official that they’re joining the series in Mercedes place as we head towards Gen 3 of Formula E. We talk about the structure of the new team after just moving into Brackley themselves, as well as their potential driver lineup in the future. We know Stoffel’s heading to DS Penske, but will Nyck De Vries stick around with Williams rumours persisting? Is Rene Rast, or maybe someone else joining?

Also, we talk Edo Mortara. He took nearly 60 points out of Berlin and brought himself right back into contention for the title. But was this a blip for a power-dominant track or a genuine push for Mortara and Venturi?

And we had to break down a unique situation in Qualifying and the duels, with Alex Sims and Jean-Eric Vergne having a TIE in qualifying. JEV called it the stupidest rule he’s ever seen in his life? But was it, and was there a fairer way?

All that and a game of who we piss off the most, on the latest Motorsport101!

May 27, 2022 Helio Castroneves | My big break

Helio Castroneves | My big break

Helio Castroneves says that destiny guided his glittering IndyCar career that’s crowned by a record-equalling four Indy 500 wins, but the path to glory was far from straightforward.

He speaks to Chris Medland in the opening episode from season two of our Big Break podcast series, charting the make-or-break moments that shaped top-level racers, engineers and managers.

Ahead of this year’s Indy 500, Castroneves recalls his early dreams of racing in Formula 1, graduating from karting in Brazil to living in Milton Keynes in British F3, and then the conversation with his sponsor that brought him to the unfamiliar ladder to IndyCar.

That journey was studded with challenge, tragedy and a court case with Emerson Fittipaldi — plus a 14-week run to victory on Dancing with the Stars, that is credited with bringing an extra 1m viewers to IndyCar.

Now in search of a record-equalling fifth Indy 500 win, Castroneves says that the sky’s the limit, with no thoughts of retirement. When we’re in this business [of racing], it’s our life, it’s what we do, it’s the air that I breathe,” he says.

Episode #363: 2022 MotoGP French Grand Prix Report

A record crowd of 110,000 on race day heads to Le Mans to witness home hero Fabio Quartararo… finish off the podium?!

It was Enea Bastianini who stole the field’s lunch money again with a stunning 2nd half of the race performance to not only beat but humiliate the factory Ducati bosses after beating Francesco Bagnaia so bad he panicked and crashed at the final corner with 7 laps left.

It was such a beating that Bastianini took his spice into the press conference with him and claimed Bagnaia is afraid of him as a teammate over Jack Miller, his other competition for the factory team next year. Is this fair? We discuss it on the show!

We also talk about some of the silly season rumours as it turns out Joan Mir wasabout to stay at Suzuki according to his manager, and Alex Rins is the #1 rider on the board. Where will they end up?

That and so much more, on Motorsport101!

May 20, 2022 Episode #362: 2022 IndyCar Grand Prix of Indy Report

Episode #362: 2022 IndyCar Grand Prix of Indy Report

We were due a crazy one in IndyCar at some point with this season, and we just got one as IndyCar kicked off its Month of May with a rain-affected GMR Grand Prix of Indianapolis!

It was Colton Herta that took full advantage of the changeable conditions, gambled on slicks first, leapt to the front from 14th and would then be virtually unstoppable at the front.

Mind you, he got a gift in the hands of Scott McLaughlin and his pitcrew. They were so adamant the track would dry out that slicks would be quicker. Until he spun under caution with slicks on a wet track. Same for Pato O’Ward as the title contenders parted like Moses and the Red Sea. Alex Palou and Josef Newgarden also struggling to see the flag off the lead lap. We talk that and some of the driving standards we saw in Indy which… weren’t good, chief!

We also talk about the future of the series as talk persists that we may see a Netflix-style documentary series about IndyCar in the future. We talk about the potential pitfalls that the series could have in producing that and the audience it might try to reach.

It’s the first of three episodes over the weekend, so check back soon for MotoGP from Le Mans!

May 17, 2022 Episode #361: 2022 Formula 1 Miami GP Report

Episode #361: 2022 Formula 1 Miami GP Report

Let’s be honest here folks – This was the one we were all circling on the calendars. One of the most heavily anticipated and hyped races ever seen in F1, and we extended our show to compensate. Buckle up, because this one is wild.

We had to talk about the hype going in. This was so heavily promoted that we had a Wednesday night concert with all the drivers and team bosses before a wheel was even turned. Influencers and celebs galore. David Beckham, Michael Jordan, JJ and TJ Watt, Francois Bourgeois and many, many more to name but a few.

The race itself was never going to live up to expectation but we still thought it was alright. Max Verstappen had to survive a late storm from Charles Leclerc after a safety car turned the race into an 11 lap sprint, but the midfield quickly became a bar fight with Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly and Mick Schumacher all committing nasty acts of racecraft. Mick’s was on Vettel, in a pure Top 10 Anime Betrayals moment.

We also talk about Lewis Hamilton and Jewellery gate after the former decided to kickback hard over the FIA’s enforcement of a 15-year old rule that seemingly got swept under the rug. We tried to add a nuanced perspective as to why it isn’t just Lewis being targeted, and the logic behind the enforcement. It’s NOT as simple as you think.

And we talk Miami as a whole. This GP is definitely here to stay, but does it fit amongst F1’s new world order? Is the $17.50 lemonades and $640 grandstand seats a turn off? Does F1 have an accessibility problem? We try to make sense of it at the end of the show.

It’s a special hour-long edition of Motorsport101, enjoy!

May 14, 2022 Episode #360: 2022 IndyCar Grand Prix of Alabama Report

Episode #360: 2022 IndyCar Grand Prix of Alabama Report

IndyCar returned for Round 4 of the 2022 Season, and we had to stand back for fireworks at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, as we had a prime slab of beef to deal with!

First and foremost, the winner. Pato O’Ward, Mr Fast Hands, was superb in his final stint, passing Rinus on cold tyres round the outside of Charlotte’s Web, and would hold off a fast charging Palou to take his first win of 2022. But this was overshadowed by the constant talk regarding his future. Is he staying? Is he staying but heading to F1? Is there a new deal coming? We break it all down with RJ, who was in the press conference room as it all broke down!

We also talked about a heated clash between Romain Grosjean and Graham Rahal. Grosjean left the Charlotte’s Web with 2 “Bumps” on Rahal on the exit that was nonconsequential. But Rahal lost his rag with the Frenchman, accusing him of doing it on purpose. He’d even go onto suggest there might be retaliation and had half the paddock agrreeing with him? Who was right? Why was there such beef? And did we really go OTT with it?

We also talk more struggles for Colton Herta in the midfield as well as Josef Newgarden’s 3-stopper going to crap as the cautions screwed the more aggressive runners. All that and more in a heated Motorsport101 episode!
