January 31, 2024 John Watson: Centenary Stories

John Watson: Centenary Stories

A five-time grand prix winner who partnered the likes of Niki Lauda and Alain Prost, John Watson came achingly close to winning the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship.

He’s our latest guest in a special podcast series marking 100 years of Motor Sport‘s publication, as he charts a changing era of F1 when Lauda and Mario Andretti introduced new levels of professionalism and ruthlessness to the sport.

In a series of fascinating and funny tales, Watson covers driving for Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team, witnessing Lauda’s influence, and seeing the emerging talent of Prost. The driver who still holds the record for winning a grand prix from furthest back on the grid (22nd place) also tackles the art of overtaking and gives his predictions for the future of racing.

Mario Andretti: Centenary Stories

F1 World Champion, four-time IndyCar title-holder and Daytona 500 winner, Mario Andretti is the first guest in a special podcast series marking 100 years of Motor Sport‘s publication

Andretti has been a regular in Motor Sport‘s pages for more than half that time, and is still making headlines, with plans to be the first to test the Andretti F1 car, if the team is granted a place on the grid.

He joins Rob Widdows to recall a career that made him one of the sport’s all-time greats, from watching Stirling Moss and Alberto Ascari as a spectator, to meeting Colin Chapman, succeeding in F1, and then racing against his son.

We have a fleet of Porsche’s, as well as customers behind them, but can they execute when it matters most? How about BMW? Where’s their ceiling as they collab with IndyCar’s RLL? January 18, 2024 Episode #494: 2024 Formula E Mexico City ePrix Review

Episode #494: 2024 Formula E Mexico City ePrix Review

Welcome back to electric avenue to a Mexico City ePrix that… happened. Seriously, this wasn’t a classic but we surprised ourselves by going 50 minutes on an ePrix that had (count em’), THREE on-track overtakes!

Pascal Wehrlein would dominate the running, winning comfortably almost lights-to-flag from pole position, ahead of Buemi at Envision and Nick Cassidy’s Jaguar debut getting him on the podium in third. But is Mexico responsible for the lack of action, or the cars themselves?

We also try to make sense of the pecking order, has enough changed? Is Jaguar and Porsche still on top? Where does ERT fit in alongside DS and Nissan?

And finally, we review the first offering of Whisper’s production and whether it was a good idea to have Jermaine Jenas anchor a Formula E broadcast (No, god bless him he tried), and whether the show has missed a trick not having one of their other shows featured…

January 9, 2024 Episode #493: 2024 Formula E Season Preview

Episode #493: 2024 Formula E Season Preview

So much for a break in January eh? Welcome back to Formula E on the Motorsport101 Channel, and for our 2024 Season Preview, we brought in Motion Podcast host Sascha Garlick back to chinwag over the Season 10 that starts this Saturday in Mexico City!

In this 2-hour preview, we talk about the big issues for the series off the track – Such as their pre-season testing fire in Valencia and the knock-on effect it’ll have on Mahindra. We talk about the upcoming Attack Charge pitstops being added that have been pushed back to Misano in April.

There’s also a big culture clash incoming as more conventional road courses in Misano and Shanghai are being added to the calendar, with Hyderabad pushed out due to a change of governance. Does the series know what it wants to be? Even more so now it’s off free-to-air television in the UK?

Then we break down all the runners and riders for 2024. Can the Mahindra teams get off the bottom? Can McLaren find some form with Sam Bird now in the ranks? What about Nissan and the return of Oli Rowland alongside Sasha Fenestraz’s proven speed?

Can Stellantis make their mark after midfield drama last season? And then the big hitters – Can Porsche’s two teams co-exist? And can Envision compete with Jaguar’s factory Superteam of Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy now Envision’s drivers are focusing on Le Mans?

And finally, a full breakdown of all 50 drivers on the list, as well as someone the names who didn’t. Who did we think was too low? Was Japan better represented in 2023? And which IndyCar ranking made Dre pull his hair out?

Ep. 253 – Larry Holt, Pt. 2

Larry Holt is one of the most respected and influential characters behind the scene in many motorsport paddocks. Effectively managing the motorsport programs of Multimatic, an international automotive design and manufacturing company, Larry and Multimatic have been part of an incredible roster of noteworthy sportscar programs, including the Ford GT, Porsche GTP, and upcoming Mustang GT3. What makes Larry a legend, however, is his one-of-a-kind demeanor and storytelling. Lunch was served courtesy of Annina’s Bakeshow and Catering in Goodwood, Canada, with Larry’s son Geoff taking us via his band STRNGR STRNGR and the song “Mech Force 10.” Thanks again to Continental Tire for making it all happen.
