McLaren extend contract with Stoffel Vandoorne for 2018

It is Stoffel Vandoorne’s home race this weekend in Belgium, and there is good news and bad news for the young driver. The good news is that he’s been re-signed at McLaren for an undisclosed period of time. Chief Zak Brown said: “Let me put it this way, when we signed Stoffel, we intended that he would race for us for a significant number of years, and that remains our firm intention.”

Stoffel added: “I’m delighted that the team has now formally announced that I will continue to race for them next year, because I’ll be able to approach the second half of my rookie season with total focus on the job in hand: namely getting the very most I can out of my car, my engineers, and everything and everyone around me.”

Unfortunately, and this is the bad news, the next race is at Spa, where Stoffel is taking a 35 place grid penalty for using an upgraded Honda engine. That certainly will give him something to focus on.

BikeLive #27 – A Mountain to Climb

BikeLive comes to you early this week as Louis and Dre review the Cadwell Park round of the British Superbike Championship as James Ellison left himself with a mountain to climb to make the showdown, even if he conquered Cadwell’s notorious jump.

We look at the Showdown state of play with one round to go of the ‘regular season’ as well as the race for the World Superbike Championship which continues to go Jonathan Rea’s way, despite a Chaz Davies double at the Lausitzring

Kimi Räikkönen confirmed at Ferrari for 2018

Ferrari released one of the shortest press statements in motorsport today confirming their continued partnership with Kimi Räikkönen for the 2018 season, or as they call it, their “technical and racing agreement.” It’s unusual timing for the announcement, as they would usually want to create headlines around the Italian Grand Prix, which is only about ten days away.

Of course, the speculation is that retaining Kimi is part of the deal to also keep Sebastian Vettel, whose own F1 contract with Ferrari runs out at the end of this year. Negotiations are presumably ongoing.

Räikkönen remaining with the Scuderia didn’t always seem to be a certainty, with team boss Sergio Marchionne previously calling the Finn out for his performance and saying: “I think Kimi has got to show a higher level of commitment to the process.” Two podium finishes in Hungary and Britain, have no doubt gone some way to convincing the bosses that he does want to stay with the team and with the sport.

August 21, 2017 Formula One launches eSports virtual championship

Formula One launches eSports virtual championship

Published by Christine Blachford

With the growing popularity of eSports – championships of online gamers competing against each other for high prizes – Formula One have jumped right on the bandwagon. This isn’t something you’d have seen F1 doing in years of old, but this year Formula One will run their first eSports world championship, running through the final months of the year.

The championship is being run in conjunction with official F1 games developer Codemasters, as well as eSports aficionados Gfinity. There will be qualifying, semi-finals and finals playing the F1 2017 game and running from September to November, with the final to be held in Abu Dhabi alongside the last race of the physical F1 series.

FOM have said this is a new way to engage the fans, and with anyone able to enter, this really does open up the sport to a wider and potentially new audience. It’s not clear what the grand prize will be yet, apart from automatic entry into next year’s event, but whatever the prize, it should be fun!
