Sebastian Vettel remains at Ferrari for 2018 alongside Kimi

Just a few days after Ferrari confirmed they’re retaining Kimi Räikkönen for the 2018 season, the Scuderia have announced a contract extension with Sebastian Vettel as well. The German driver has secured a three year deal with the Italian team, which will see him race in red until the end of the 2020 season.

There had been speculation that Vettel was tempted with a move to the superbly competitive Mercedes, but Niki Lauda quashed those rumours, saying: “We discussed it briefly once with him, but the more competitive Ferrari goes the less reason he would want to leave. So therefore we stopped right away a couple of months ago.”

Both Red Bull drivers are contracted for next season, as is Lewis Hamilton. Bottas was only a one year deal but is likely to stay with Mercedes for another season, so the drivers at the top of the table are likely to stay the same for another year yet.

  • MotoGP from Austria, where someone cleared off for a bit, then there was a bit of a ding-dong and someone won and someone didn’t, and there was a last-lap, last-corner, last-gasp move that was actually just a bit silly even though nobody seems to want to say it (except the bloke who won).
  • British Superbikes from Cadwell Park, which neither of us watched even though one of us was actually there, and which turned out to be pretty brilliant.
  • The new 158bhp BMW road bike that we’ve both ridden but only one of us can talk about.
  • Touratech going insolvent, which is all very curious given almost everyone seems to be riding an adventure bikes these days.

Felipe Massa crashes out of practice in Spa on F1 return

Felipe Massa was back in the car for Williams after sitting out the Hungarian Grand Prix due to illness. After a summer break of recovery, Massa was back fit and fighting, but crashed out of FP1 just 16 minutes in. The driver was uninjured but the car was damaged and required a chassis change, that meant Massa had to miss FP2 in its entirety.

Meanwhile, Kimi Räikkönen was fastest in the first session, with Lewis Hamilton behind him, splitting the two Ferrari drivers. Bottas ran through the gravel and touched the barriers but avoided major damage, whilst Kevin Magnussen had headrest trouble and had to pit early.

In the second session, rain halted much of the running, although a few hardy drivers did try out the extreme wet tyres. Hamilton was fastest, with a lap set in the dry conditions, Räikkönen second to prove the Mercedes and Ferrari battle is still on.

FBC indi Episode 39 – Gateway Shuffle

Tonight, we review the other 500-mile race on the Verizon IndyCar Schedule, the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.  The tricky triangle brought us some good racing, and some serious engineering challenges to a number of team.

Bourdais is back even earlier than expected!  He’ll run the No. 18 Dale Coyne car for the final three races which includes this weekend’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Gateway Motorsports Park.  John and I will be at the track this weekend, and will bring you all of the stories and photos from IndyCar’s return to the 1.25-mile paperclip oval.
