Cool overtakes, flaming engines and a squealing child: yes, the Spanish Grand Prix had it all. Cheeka, Phill and Terry review the best race of the season so far, in the State Of F1 we consider if F1 should have the NASCAR model of open scrutiny and we launch the greatest competition EVER.
166: e164 – Teary Thomas & panting Lewis lead Spain’s FAKE NEWS | The NR F1 Podcast
It had been a decent start to the Formula 1 season – but things found a whole new level in Spain.
We had teary Thomas meeting his hero Kimi Raikkonen; it’s probably his reputation for liking ice-cream. Then there were the epic battles on track: Sebastien Vettel and Valtteri Bottas, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and that last chicane.
Edition 164 of The NR F1 Podcast reviews round 5 of the 2017 F1 championship, as the Spanish Grand Prix in Catalunya is lit up by Pascal Wehrlein, Esteban Ocon, Fernando Alonso and a Lewis Hamilton so hungry, he couldn’t even tell his race engineers to leave him to it.
The crew also dish out their Of The Weekend awards – with no shortage of candidates.
And if you like a bit of hindsight with your F1, then take in the pod’s Spain preview: https://audioboom.com/posts/5908301

Driver insight with Karun Chandhok: Spanish Grand Prix
Karun Chandhok’s latest post-race insight – the big Barcelona updates, how Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes combined to deny Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari, and why this is shaping up to be the best F1 season for years.
Ferrari miss out on race win after safety car strategy call
Published by Christine Blachford
Sebastian Vettel snatched the lead of the race from polesitter Lewis Hamilton off the line, as the Spanish Grand Prix got underway. Behind them, Valtteri Bottas nudged Kimi Räikkönen who had a hard impact with Max Verstappen, knocking both drivers out of the race. With tyre strategy the main area to make gains or losses, Bottas remained out the longest of the front runners and managed to hold up Vettel, but things still looked like they were going Ferrari’s way.
That is until Stoffel Vandoorne beached his McLaren in the gravel after contact with Felipe Massa. The virtual safety car was deployed and Hamilton essentially got a free pit stop. When Vettel’s next stop came he rejoined side by side with the Mercedes, kept the position but some tense laps followed. Hamilton made it past, took the lead and never looked back. Vettel stayed second, with Daniel Ricciardo a distant and lonesome third.
The only other retirement of the day was Bottas, whose engine was smoking as he pulled to a halt off track. Pascal Wehrlein finished in the top ten to bring home Sauber’s first points of the season, whilst Force India finished fourth and fifth to consolidate their fourth place in the championship.

Front End Chatter #56
Hello and welcome to Front End Chatter, and episode 56 brought to you in association with our pals at www.bikesocial.co.uk.
This week, between blackbird interruptions, we look back at the fallout from the spectacular Jerez MotoGP race – which isn’t the same as the Corby Grand Prix – including:
- race weekend perfection from Daniel Pedrosa
- Yamaha’s asymmetrical grip
- the world’s least safe safety car
- a last corner clash that failed to materialise
- the closest championship since 2009
- do the riders, premium athletes to a man, actually pop a can of Red Bull in parc fermé?
- the trials and tribulations of ex-Moto2 rider and sometime World Champ Danny Kent, who’s not from Kent
Plus – a re-evaluation of Ducati’s SuperSport, the merits of A2-licence friendly inline fours or parallel twins, and news of Avon’s new Spirit ST, their ‘hypertouring’ tyre.
Plus – some of your emails, including more of your best-looking non-sportsbikes, is speeding as socially unacceptable as drunk driving, who is General Zarco, what is the Kuiper Belt, is an MOT really necessary, what is defensive riding, how to fix a heavy throttle, and how to spot an idiot bike seller.
Thanks for listening, please support our friends at www.bikesocial.co.uk, and please email us on anything@frontendchatter.com
