Front End Chatter #61

Hello everybody and welcome to Front End Chatter – Britain’s best biking podcast, powered (and empowered) by the wondrous two-wheeled website known as Bike Social (that’s www.bikesocial.co.uk – and you should definitely check them out).

It’s episode 61, which as everybody knows is the **must remember to search Google for an obscure name of somebody who once raced a motorcycle with number 61 here** episode. Which, ironically, has very little racing at all, being mostly composed of:

  • Chatter about the front end of BMW’s R1200GS, and how the previous service campaign – not a recall – to fix the fork stanchions is, erm, ahem, cough, now a recall.
  • Martin rides to a village in the German Alps to drink beer in the company of 40,000 bikes, while Simon rides to a café near Whitchurch for the world’s largest all-female bikers meeting.
  • Aprilia’s Shiver 900, and why are “middleweight”s getting so big now?
  • Plus roughly one trillion and seventy-two of your finest emails, covering everything from Yamaha Tracer adverts, insurance groups, the best bikes ever to grace the silver screen, Simon gets his helmet out to demonstrate something to Martin, is the new Fireblade changing its tune or is that just the rider, and lots and lots and lots more.

To chatter back to us, email anything@frontendchatter.com or Twit us on @SimonHbikes and @Mufga

And, of course, go take a look at Bike Social!

July 20, 2017 Episode #95: The Bird Is The Word

Episode #95: The Bird Is The Word

I say, do you know about the bird?

In this triple header on Motorsport101, Me and Ryan King break down all the action from Formula E in New York, while King gets mad at company’s PR. Also, Sam Bird did a double and reminded everyone he’s really good at this Formula E stuff. King was actually there so we’ll share some beind the scenes!

Small unimportant matter of the British Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton dominated, with Ferrari suffering punctures, and Daniel Ricciardo coming from the back to crack the Top 5. Oh, and Danill Kyvat takes out his teammate. Fun times!

And we get to IndyCar in Toronto, with Josef Newgarden getting a really jammy win off a lucky yellow flag, as Alex Rossi and James Hinchcliffe made up a podium, and Helio stole the show with a stunning Lap 1 pass. Oh, and Dixon was salty again. Again, fun times!

Enjoy the show!

July 20, 2017 Ferrari & Mercedes Control Fernando Alonso’s Fate In F1?

Ferrari & Mercedes Control Fernando Alonso’s Fate In F1?

Ferrari & Mercedes don’t seem interested in hiring Fernando Alonso’s services for 2018. But by not willing to offer Mclaren their power units for 2018, they’re not helping Mclaren (and hence, Formula 1) retain Alonso either. Are Ferrari and Mercedes controlling Fernando Alonso’s fate in Formula 1? In fact, we think they are certainly controlling the ‘competitive quotient’ of Formula 1 too.

From power struggles, Formula 1 is now witnessing power unit struggles! In this week’s episode of the Inside Line F1 Podcast, Mithila and Kunal discuss Formula 1’s partnership with Snapchat, the business of the F1 Live Events (we can’t wait for the next one!), Formula 1 drivers releasing their personalised emoji packs (we can’t wait for Raikkonen’s) and how another ‘Sebastian’ might join the grid in 2018.

Tune in!

FIA push through halo head protection device for 2018

The FIA have revealed some findings from a meeting between the FIA, team representatives, and the strategy group, and they’ve decided to go ahead with the halo device for enhanced cockpit protection, despite the fact the majority of reports about the device have revealed little support. In February, the FIA admitted opinion from the drivers was split 50/50, but now they say it’s the way forward.

The statement says: “With the support of the teams, certain features of its design will be further enhanced. Having developed and evaluated a large number of devices over the past five years, it had become clear that the Halo presents the best overall safety performance.”

Autosport report that their sources say nine out of the ten teams were not in favour of the halo, but with other devices falling short – the most recent innovation, the shield, left Vettel feeling dizzy – then the FIA are pushing forward with the Halo on the grounds of safety.
