Front End Chatter #58

Hello and welcome to Front End Chatter Episode 58, supported by www.bikesocial.co.uk and sponsored by Bennetts – and a very special, fully employed episode it is too; featuring, as it does:

1) Mugello MotoGP goss including

  • Rossi’s motocross crash
  • a worrying resemblance to a CGI character from Lord Of The Rings
  • a bad case of the shlitz
  • fast Ducatis
  • how to celebrate a win
  • Mattia Pasini’s odd riding controls and his clutchless downshifts
  • Triumph’s Moto2 deal

2) TT goss including – in fact almost entirely – semi-informed speculation about the travails of Honda, the 2017 Fireblade, and riders Guy Martin and John McGuinness – with an attempt to understand the connection between their accidents and the road bike (if there are any)

3) Loads of your emails, on wide-ranging subjects from the health of World Superbike and a few ideas on how to make it better, cheap motorway bikes, Husqvarna Nudas, more best-looking non-sportsbikes, and tons of other chattering.

As ever thank you very much for listening, and thank you even more for downloading it from the top folk at Bike Social (that’s still www.bikesocial.co.uk). Please email us on anything@frontendchatter.com or get us on that there Twitter using @SimonHbikes and @Mufga

Fernando Alonso issues McLaren win-this-year ultimatum

It was always going to be an adjustment for Fernando Alonso to return to Formula One, after having so much fun (and doing so well!) in the Indy 500 last month. However, he’s due to return to the car in Canada and for the rest of the season. After that? He’s not so sure.

The Spaniard says: “We have to win. If we are winning before September, when I will make my decision, I will stay. I joined this project to win the title. If you are not in a competitive position, maybe you change project.”

It’s a huge ask for the team to turn their fortunes around, considering they haven’t even got a point on the board yet and struggle to get both cars to the end of each race. That’s something McLaren boss Zak Brown blames Honda for, saying: “I don’t want to get into what our options are. Our preference is to win the world championship with Honda. But at some point you need to make a decision as to whether that’s achievable. And we have serious concerns.”

Episode #89: Rahal Or Nothing At All

It’s a full house here on Motorsport101 as for the first time this month, RJ’s back with us! And he has an awesome Keepin’ It 101 on Jenson Button racing the Suzuka 1000km in Super GT!

We also talk at length about IndyCar’s Dual In Detroit with Graham Rahal dominating the weekend to become the first ever Double Winner in Detroit, and the first double winner in IndyCar since Scott Dixon did it in Toronto in 2013!

There’s also the rise and fall, and rise and fall again of James Hinchcliffe, Spencer Pigot’s spectacular blowout and the restart that never was, and we finally discuss the IndyCar vs F1 arguments following Rahal, Hinch and Kaanan’s shade thrown at Lewis Hamilton after he criticised the series lack of depth.

All that, Champions League football talk, Dirt 4, Robert Kubica and more, all up in the next Motorsport101!

June 7, 2017 Robert Kubica wraps up F1 test with Renault in Spain

Robert Kubica wraps up F1 test with Renault in Spain

It’s a sight we’ve been waiting for for a long time, but Robert Kubica has participated in, and completed, a full test with the Renault team at the Valencia circuit in Spain. The Polish driver was last in a car in 2010, before his F1 career was interrupted by a horrific rallying crash that caused severe injuries to his arm.

Whilst his drive with Lotus-Renault was put on hold, Kubica continued to race in rallying championships once his rehabilitation was complete. But there was always a question mark over whether he would be able to drive a Formula One car again.

Now he’s completed 115 laps in Valencia in an older F1 car, the 2012 edition, mixing up fast lap qualifying practice alongside longer high fuel race simulations. Afterwards, Kubica said: “For me, it’s been an important day from an emotional point of view. It has been a long time away from the paddock… a few years ago I felt it was impossible. I’m proud with what I achieved today, but also it shows what I have lost.”
