F1 Debrief – I really give that a thumbs up

On this show, we discuss the new style of Formula One, from the lower rear wings to the wider tyres, and everything that brings to the race track. After two events of the 2017 season, we’re excited to see what’s been happening and to ponder what the rest of the year might bring.

We also discuss what, if any, elements of the race weekend can be easily discarded, particularly given the evidence we saw in China. We also ponder Vettel’s parking issues and the attitude of the stewards, as well as post-race hugging and plenty of happiness on the podium.

There’s time to debrief on the inter-team fights going on at Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull, whilst also sharing a quick thought about an ex-racer battle as well. With thoughts on Verstappen, Grosjean, Giovinazzi, McLaren and what we expect from Bahrain, there’s plenty to digest from this F1 Debrief show.

Have Ferrari Forgotten Team Orders?

After the incredible Chinese Grand Prix, we wondered what most Ferrari fans would’ve wondered – why did Ferrari not ask Kimi Raikkonen to move over and let Sebastian Vettel pass? Could this strategic move have altered the race result? Did this ‘no team order’ strategy blunder cost Ferrari more than their tyre strategy for Vettel?

Frankly, we’re happy that Ferrari let their drivers race. Yes, it’s unusual, but it is something that Mercedes and Red Bull Racing have been … See More doing since ages. Thank you, Ferrari. And since we’re thanking people, thank you Max Verstappen for a fantastic charge up the grid.

The Chinese Grand Prix also confirmed two things: First, we’re about to witness a closely contested season after many many many years! It’ll be a Ferrari vs. Mercedes to start with and we’re praying Red Bull Racing join the action too. Second, it’ll be Vettel vs. Hamilton battle for the Drivers’ Championship and Bottas vs. Raikkonen for the Constructors’ Championship.

In this week’s episode, our hosts look forward to the first double header racing weekend of the season. Yes, we’ll be racing in Bahrain in a few days. Should Bernie Ecclestone buy Interlagos just to have some fun with the new boys running Formula 1? Could Fernando Alonso deflect to Williams in 2018? Lewis Hamilton wins the Chinese race to equal Vettel points

It was a wet start to the race, with almost all the drivers opting for intermediate tyres. Lance Stroll went off into the gravel immediately, causing a virtual safety car, meaning many quickly took the option to change to slicks. Antonio Giovinazzi followed up with a huge crash into the main straight pit wall. He was fine but the real safety car was called.

When the action got going, Lewis Hamilton led comfortably from the front and was untroubled to pick up another win in China. Sebastian Vettel battled past his teammate to take second place, whilst Red Bull were having their own inter-team battle. Max Verstappen swept past about nine cars on the first lap, and clawed his way up into third place for the final few laps. Daniel Ricciardo caught him up and hunted him to the line but had to settle for fourth.

Meanwhile, both McLaren drivers retired from the race with mechanical trouble, as did Daniil Kvyat who pulled his Toro Rosso off track. Hamilton and Vettel now sit on equal points in the championship as the battle really looks on between Mercedes and Ferrari.
