March 7, 2017 Paul Hembery changes roles at Pirelli

Paul Hembery changes roles at Pirelli

Published by Christine Blachford

Since Pirelli re-joined Formula One ahead of the 2011 season, we have become very familiar with Paul Hembery – the spokesperson in the paddock for the Italian tyre manufacturers. Hembery has handled the triumphs and the criticism in equal measure and with relatively good grace, but now it’s time for a change.

Pirelli confirmed during the first day of the final week of pre-season testing that Hembery has been given a new role as Chief Executive Officer of Pirelli’s Latin American organisation. It’s a promotion to CEO position, although being taken away from his prominent position in the global sport may not be seen as such a step forward. However, the company are keeping him involved where possible.

The day to day duties of motorsport for Pirelli will be handed to Mario Isola, who is head of car racing – more than just Formula One. Hembery will remain in overall control of the motorsport activities, and will occasionally still be spotted in the paddock, but it seems as though all questions, and those criticisms, should be directed to Isola first.

March 7, 2017 PR Laps To Hoodwink Sponsors

PR Laps To Hoodwink Sponsors

The second pre-season test is underway in Barcelona. While the form factor of most teams is predictable, in this week’s episode of the Inside Line F1 Podcast, Mithila and Kunal wonder which team will actually put in a ‘PR’ lap. Also, which team needs one the most?

On the note of sponsors, there’s talk that Force India might turn pink IF a particular sponsor joins them. We tell you Vijay Mallya’s link with the brand and name Pinky and why at least two people See More wouldn’t mind the Force India being coloured pink.

Williams followed up their JCB announcement with a partnership announcement with Bombardier. Is the air plane partner the best (and cheapest) way to transport spares across the world just in case Lance Stroll turns out to be the next Pastor Maldonado?

Finally, we talk about Hamilton-Bottas’ team-mate relationship, Hamilton-branded Monster Energy can, the dip in Formula 1 viewership in 2016 before we finally conclude with our ‘The Joke’s On Mclaren’ section. Tune in!

It’s not a grower – in fact, it’s horrible! That’s the verdict of David Tillyer as The NR F1 Podcast returns ahead of the 2017 Formula 1 season, to sum up some of the big winter stories, the first forays into pre-season testing, the new rule changes – and most importantly, those darn liveries.

Edition 144 of the pod sees Michael Bailey signal The NR F1 Podcast’s intentions for the new year – the pod’s sixth season – with Tillyer and Richard Baxter in tow. They also reminisce over Bernie’s exit and ask the question, does Taco Bell give you the squits?

March 4, 2017 Front End Chatter #51

Front End Chatter #51

Say hello to Front End Chatter Episode 51, a numerically insignificant episode that nonetheless contains much chatterage about:

  • the opening round of World Super Brits from Phillip Island – although if you haven’t seen the racing you’ll be none the wiser afterwards because we watched it and still manage to get the race result wrong not once, but twice…

  • MotoGP testing from the very same Phillip Island at which, it seems, “They’re all going really fast…”

Plus!

  • how Ducati’s new SuperSport is less sports tourer, more sportsbike

  • why Kawasaki’s new Z900 is a 123bhp entry-level naked bike

  • and why the new Ninja 650 is, er, an entry-level bike with a full fairing

And there’s more:

We read out your lovely emails on subjects as wide and wonderful as:

  • the great hi-viz debate – to yellow or not to yellow

  • bike security in London

  • the wisdom of modifying modern sportsbikes

  • a comparison of the average increase in rider skill v the increase in motorcycle performance

  • the great Honda Africa Twin underperforming heated grip and corroding spokes problems – BOTH SOLVED! Ish.

  • why some new bikes are released with obvious problems you’d think the factory would sort during testing

  • what’s the better choice – a six-grand Triumph Daytona 675 or Suzuki GSX-R750?

  • why we should argue more often (‘no we shouldn’t’, etc)

  • why photochromic visors are a good idea

  • how FEC is ‘helping’ native Spanish-speakers with their English comprehension

  • Honda’s DCT v quickshifters

  • what bikes do we prefer – riding older, nostalgic machines or sampling the new stuff, with modern technology?

  • how oe fitment tyres are completely different to aftermarket tyres with the same name from the same manufacturer

As ever, we remain humbly grateful for your continued ears. Thanking youse! You can get us on:

March 4, 2017 BikeLive #2 – Rea Turns 40

BikeLive #2 – Rea Turns 40

Some say, life begins at 40. Others say Jonathan Rea owns our souls. They’re both right.

In this episode of #BikeLive, Louis Suddaby and Andre Harrison review an action packed season opener in World Superbikes with three fantastic Philip Island races. Even if Jonny still doubled up! It also includes the rise of Alex Lowes, Marco Melandri’s surprising show of speed (Well, not surprising according to Dre), and mentioning just how badly Honda and Aprilla shit the collective bed.

Also, a World Supersport race split by 0.001 of a second, won by Robbie Rolfo. Yes, THAT Robbie Rolfo. Feel old yet?

We also cover some early ground in MotoGP testing, and talk about Dorna’s new British Talent Cup, designed to find the best British Isles talent in Moto3, spearheaded by John “Last Chance Saloon” McPhee. Spoiler: We’re not so sure this one’s a winner.

Enjoy the show, maybe next time we’ll manage to fish Rebecca out of that damn pub!
